Avoid a Toilet Overflow

Overflowing toilets are every homeowner's worst nightmare. The mess and odors can be extremely stressful and overwhelming. That is why SERVPRO of Fairfield County is here to help!
A toilet overflow usually occurs when a blockage prevents water and waste from flushing down the toilet drain. This backup prevents water and waste from flowing down the drain and causes your toilet overflowing. As your toilet backs up, clean water and waste will overflow the toilet bowl. If not cleaned up quickly, it may cause extensive water damage to your bathroom floor or even leak through the ceiling below. Other common causes of overflowing toilets are sewage backups, septic tank issues, low flow toilets and malfunctioning plumbing.
Keep Your Toilet from Overflowing:
- Shop towels, hunks of hair, cat litter, and other products can clog the toilet
- Even toilet paper can clog a toilet if there is too much of it
- Flush in large batches if there is large amount of material
- Low-flow toilets save water and try patience – hold the handle down for a couple of extra seconds to make sure that there is enough water
- If the water in the toilet bowl is high, use a plunger to clear the drain
- Don't wait until the water is up to the bowl's rim – the water will have nowhere to go except the floor
- If a plunger doesn't work, call a plumber
